Learning in Action: CHS Student Interns At Local Hospital
by Ben Fitzgerald

At Campbellsville High School, there are Eagles rising above and taking challenges through internships not everyone is ready for, whether they be welding, carpentry
or auto mechanics. Students take pride in the work they accomplish for, and in representing, our school in the community. In particular, there is a student,
Kathryn Doss, participating in an internship at Taylor Regional Hospital.
Recently, I asked Kathryn a few questions about her internship. She stated that one reason behind her choice in taking on the internship was that she is looking into the field of nursing and figured she would “test the waters” to see if nursing was meant for her. When asked what her favorite part about this task was, Kathryn answered that she enjoyed learning about and observing the effects that different anesthesias have on people. She also enjoyed observing different surgeries such as C-Sections, pace maker implants, or tonsillectomies.
As Kathryn said, internships are a way to “test the waters” and determine whether or not the career you desire is the career that will be a good fit for you. Along with ensuring that nursing was the right field for her, Kathryn said she enjoyed meeting new people and has enjoyed the experience she has gained. An internship is not only something that a student can enjoy in high school. When she goes on to apply to colleges or for a job, Kathryn will now be able to state that she not only has a passion for her desired field, she also has work experience that not everyone would have.
If someone wants to know whether or not to take on an internship, I personally would recommend an internship for anyone as long as they have time to commit to the task. Not only would time put into an internship help students gain work experience, their future college and job applications would benefit, as well.

"A Teacher Growing Green in the South Bronx"
"A whirlwind of energy and ideas, Stephen Ritz is a teacher in New York's tough South Bronx, where he and his kids grow lush gardens for food, greenery — and jobs. Just try to keep up with this New York treasure as he spins through the many, many ways there are to grow hope in a neighborhood many have written off, or in your own." (TED.com)

One Big Idea: High School Training Ground
Young poet, educator and activist Malcolm London performs his stirring poem about life on the front lines of high school. He tells of the "oceans of adolescence" who come to school "but never learn to swim," of "masculinity mimicked by men who grew up with no fathers." Beautiful, lyrical, chilling. (TED.com).
